We consider the oceans as our home and we are committed to doing no harm by actively preventing pollution to restore ocean health and resilience and protecting animal habitats. That is why we fully comply with rules and regulations to minimise the negative impact on ocean health, including ballast water systems.
How vessels handle ballast water is affecting the health of oceans and biodiversity. Ballast water is often added in a marine environment to keep the vessel stable and safe and later discharged in another environment due to changes in cargo. This may result in invasive species disturbing local ecosystems. The Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) obligates shipowner to have ballast water treatment systems installed on all vessels by 2024.
Wagenborg has set ambitious sustainability targets, including to comply with this regulation. On a yearly basis at least 20 systems have te be installed. In 2020 we were progressing in accordance with this plan and installed even 30 ballast water treatment systems. For this year we will keep up this pace.
